RECOGNIZING THE FIRST STEPS
Are any of these all too familiar?
Formal psychological testing might be appropriate to help answer the “why.” Dr. Ian Stephens approaches the testing process with a goal to get to know your child and help identify their strengths or superpowers and areas where they may benefit from more support. Diagnosis is never guaranteed but may be an outcome of the process.

What does the testing process look like?
For adults, testing also includes information-gathering through an initial interview, face-to-face testing, rating scales from you and other important people in your life (like friends or family members), and a results session where we discuss any appropriate diagnoses and recommendations for you. It can be very helpful to involve someone in the process who has known you throughout your life, such as a parent or sibling, to gather information about your early history (especially for questions of ADHD or Autism). If you have records from your schooling such as an IEP, 504 plan, or even report cards with teacher comments, these can be very useful for Dr. Stephens to review.
Adult Testing
Testing includes information-gathering through a parent interview, child interview (when appropriate), face-to-face testing, rating scales from you and other important people in your child’s life (like teachers), and a parent and/or child results session where we discuss any appropriate diagnoses and recommendations for your child. Each assessment is tailored to the needs of your child and the question we are trying to answer. Some children can tolerate completing all testing in one day, while others need to be seen over multiple days for shorter sessions. Dr. Stephens will adapt to the needs of your child.
